A URL shortener is an online application that converts a regular URLs into its condensed or abbreviated format. There are several reasons why URLs are important.

  • It makes it easy for anyone manually typing in a web address:

    • Magazine and Direct Mail Ads

    • Radio and TV Commercials

    • Billboards, Posters & Signage

  • It’s frees up space when you’re faced with limited characters (such as Twitter or SMS)

  • They can track and compile data such as click data, geographic location, webpage link and more

  • They promote sharing because you can fit more links and content in less space, especially for URLs that are long for SEO reasons.

  • With the rise of mobile, it’s critical that getting your web address in front of the eyes of your shopper on their phone, BE EASY!

Some URL shorteners:

  1. https://bit.ly
    Bit.ly is the most popular shortener and one of the oldest.

  2. goo.gl. Goo.gl is officially the URL shortener from Google. (shut down 03/30/19)

    1. Owl.ly is from HootSuite, which can be used as a stand-alone shortener or on the HootSuite dashboard.

We'll be releasing our own internal URL shortener again soon, and bringing any over from our legacy platform, if you've created any of those already.  We're not allowing users to create new ones on their own right now, but would be happy to do it for you.

IMPORTANT: Information for owners of non-responsive websites

If you have a non-responsive website, there’s one important thing to understand about your Trade-in URLs (URL: A website address).  That is: You have TWO of them.  You will have a unique URL for each of your 2 trade-in pages, one for your desktop visitors and one for your mobile visitors.

Make sure before you create your short URL you have carefully gathered each of them if needed.
